Barriers to Pharmacogenomics

While pharmacogenomics holds the promise that drugs might one day be tailor-made for individuals and adapted to each person's own genetic makeup, there are still a number of barriers to be overcome, including

  • Complexity of finding gene variations that affect drug response
  • Limited availability of currently offered drug/treatment alternatives
  • Reimbursement disincentives for drug companies to produce multiple pharmacogenomic products, and
  • Heightened diagnostic complications for healthcare providers.
